High-energy gamma-ray astronomy is a fast-evolving discipline with a threefold objective: 1) understanding the origin and role of relativistic cosmic particles, 2) studying the physics of the most extreme astrophysical objects, such as neutron stars and black holes, 3) probing the frontiers of the Universe and of physics. I will describe the observational techniques and instruments used to study high-energy gamma rays, and highlight a few recent results that illustrate the current research in the field.
